Warwickshire Closed Championships 2000-01
Outstanding performances from individual players were
the highlight of the Warwickshire Closed Championships held on Sunday 17th December
at the St. Nicholas Park Sports Centre in Warwick
In the Mens Events Ian Ferguson (Birmingham) was the star winning the Mens Singles, Mens Doubles with Mark Reid (Birmingham) and the Mixed Doubles with Sarah Riach (Birmingham). Mark Reid was runner up in the Singles to his doubles partner while mention must also go to Andy Cockerill (Leamington), losing semi finalist (to Mark), losing Mens Doubles finalist with Phil Paine (Leamington) and losing Mixed Doubles Finalist with Julie Richardson (Leamington)
In the Ladies, Junior Girls and Cadet Girls events 12 year old Kelly Sibley (Leamington) was unstoppable, she won the Ladies Singles and Junior Singles with wins over Samantha Meredith (Leamington), won the Ladies Doubles with Sarah Riach (Birmingham) the Junior Girls Doubles with Samantha Meredith and beat Stephanie Hawkins (Leamington) in the Cadet Girls Singles.
The Junior Boys events belonged to a excellent display from Scott Prime (Birmingham) who won the Singles event with a win over his clubmate Leigh Bradford (Birmingham) and then teamed up with Gareth Hayward (Birmingham) to win the Doubles event. In the junior plate event Gareth Hayward (Birmingham) beat Sarah Riach (Birmingham) in the Final
The Cadet Boys event was dominated by Jaz Allen-Sutton (Leamington) who beat John Harrison (Birmingham) in the final
Finally the Veterans events were also dominated by a single player Kevin Pilgrim (Coventry) won both the Singles event beating his clubmate Ron Vose (Coventry) in the final and the pair then teamed up to win the doubles event with a win over John Chandler and Simon Upson (Birmingham). In the Over 50 Singles Bill Fletcher(Coventry) won the final against county secretary Alan Healey (Birmingham)
